The Early Peugeot Story in Australia

The story of Peugeot in Australia really begins with the Redex 1953 rally won by Ken Tubman on a Peugeot 203. This made the manufacturer's name, even if importation in Australia had started earlier (about 1950). The first 203s sold were imports (without wheels or bumpers!) by J.F. Regan.

In 1953 local assembly of the 203 started. The 403 was also assembled in Australia from the start by Melbourne-based Canada Cycle and Motor Company and later by Continental and General (403B) late in 1960.

For the 404, the model run in Australia was from 1962 to 1970. The best Australian-assembled Peugeot 404 was the RM special. Regan Motors offered a mildly modified version with Michelin XAS tires, a tachometer, a tweaked engine (inlet and exhaust ports 'cleaned up', carburator and advance curve modified, head machined) for $420 more than base price in 68-69.

The Peugeot story continued in Australia with the 504 ...
