The story of Peugeot in Australia really begins with the
Redex 1953 rally won by Ken Tubman on a Peugeot 203. This
made the manufacturer's name, even if importation in Australia
had started earlier (about 1950). The first 203s sold were
imports (without wheels or bumpers!) by J.F. Regan.
In 1953 local assembly of the 203 started. The 403 was also
assembled in Australia from the start by Melbourne-based Canada
Cycle and Motor Company and later by Continental and General
(403B) late in 1960.
For the 404, the model run in Australia was from 1962 to
1970. The best Australian-assembled Peugeot 404 was the RM
special. Regan Motors offered a mildly modified version with
Michelin XAS tires, a tachometer, a tweaked engine (inlet
and exhaust ports 'cleaned up', carburator and advance curve
modified, head machined) for $420 more than base price in
68-69.
