The Peugoet 404 Sedan or "Berline"

The Peugeot 404 sedan (berline) is not a rare car in France and unlike the specific body part for the cabriolet and coupe almost everything can be found. It is a very robust car with some specific weak points : severely strong braking when the Hydrovac assisted breaks are present, a fragile 3 bearing crankshaft that was replaced by a 5 bearing crankshaft early in production and, on the version with the injection motor, a motor that requires regular use otherwise it can be difficult to restart after a long sleep.

The car was produced or assembled all over the world. Even New Zealand ( see a Peugeot 404 Sedan from New Zealand)!

The 404 Sedan or 'Berline', also designed by Pinin Farina, was the 'original' 404 from which the other bodyworks were derived. I photographed the car on the right at Reims retro show (3/99).
