Peugeot 404 - Notes on the Air Filter
The air filter, its boring and not very complicated, right ? Well, I wanted to
change the filter and when the car-parts guy started asking questions I found out that the
404 has at least two different possible air filter systems (dry
or 'wet') and each one has more than two different setups.
Here is a short description and my final work-around when I
received a filter that was just too short.
These images show two mountings for dry air filters on the Peugeot 404.

The Peugeot part numbers for the possible dry air filters are :
-
1445.10 (Laurette L745 or L697) for carburator mounted cars (second drawing above)
- 1445.11 (Laurette L965) for the injection engine mounted cars
- 1445.23 (Laurette L1276) - injection, after 1967
- 1445.30 (Laurette L1275 or 1274) - carburator, up to year ??
- 1445.50 (Laurette L1621) - carburator, from year ??
- 1445.39 for the 404U6S and 404U6S automatic
The size of the filter for my 404 is 108 mm (diameter) by 170 mm
(length). This is easy to measure ; just stick a ruler in the filter
holder. I received a shorter filter (140 mm) which probably corresponds
to the later installation. To use this filter, the easiest fix was
to cut a 50 mm length of filter from a cheap, spongy air filter of
the same diameter and use that as supplementary support.
